2021 WPQ JUNIOR COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS A HUGE HIT!

The inaugural 2021 Water Polo Queensland Junior Country Championships saw regional Queensland’s best athletes converge at the magnificent St Andrew’s Aquatic Centre on the Sunshine Coast for a weekend of action packed water polo. Athletes and Teams from the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Dalby, Rockhampton, Townsville, Mackay and Cairns made up the 27 teams who battled it out for the gold, silver and bronze in each division.

The U12’s mixed division saw an all St Andrew’s final, with St Andrew’s B emerging victorious over their St Andrew’s A club mates.

Buderim proved to be the strongest team in the U14 Girls division, winning all 4 of their games. Noosa managed the same feat, taking out the gold in the U14 Boys division.

Kawana Wolves played St Andrew’s in the final for the gold in the U16 Girls division, with Kawana emerging as 11-6 victors.

Kawana fell short in the U18 Girls however, losing to Noosa 7-4 in a closely fought game.

It was the U18 Boys gold medal game that was the match up of the day however, with Noosa taking out the gold against Kawana Wolves in a nail-biting finish, winning via late drama in a 7-8 victory in the dying seconds.

Congratulations to all teams who participated over the weekend and thanks must go out to all coaches, managers and team officials.

A huge thank you to all referees, in particular our junior referees who did themselves proud at this inaugural event.

We also extend our thanks and appreciation to St Andrew’s Anglican College for hosting the event and the wonderful staff at the aquatic centre for assisting in set up, pack down and for their support in staging and delivering the event.

Water Polo Queensland look forward to hosting the Championships again in 2022!
