WPQ JUNIOR COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

From humble beginnings in 2021, the Water Polo Queensland Junior Country Championships saw exponential growth and participation in the 2022 instalment.

Originally established as a participation and pathway event for athletes, coaches and officials from regional areas, the 2022 Junior Country Championships saw 35 teams from 5 different regional centres converge on the Gold Coast from Friday 2^nd – Sunday 4^th December across Miami Aquatic Centre and the Gold Coast Performance Centre, which was double the number of participants from the 2021 competition.

In addition to the 400 plus participants, this tournament was also used as a capacity building event with the purpose of developing and upskilling our officials from regional centres to enable them to contribute positively to their local competitions, as well as building on the already strong relationships between the neighbouring regions.

Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Mackay, Cairns and Alstonville athletes all put their best foot forward across the four age categories, with a plethora of talent on display and lots of medals (and bragging rights) for the taking.

WPQ could not have facilitated the competition without the support of Major Events Gold Coast, Gold Coast Water Polo Club, Miami Aquatic Centre and the Gold Coast Performance Centre, and for their support of this event we thank them immensely.

We also thank the athletes, coaches, officials, club administrators and parents who came from far and wide to participate in this event as the tournament wouldn’t have been the success it was without your passion and commitment.
