VALE DAVE GLASSOCK

Published Fri 03 Mar 2017

The Water Polo Queensland community is mourning the passing of Dave Glassock last Thursday at 54 years of age.

The water polo community owes much to Dave Glassock for his leadership, devotion, commitment, enthusiasm, and perseverance. Dave is highly respected for his service to the sport as a coach, manager, convenor, and as the Chair of QSSWP for more than 10 years.

Dave was involved with water polo from 1996 as well as being the Chair of QSSWP from 1999-2010. He always demonstrated excellent leadership and brought water polo back from being ‘On Notice’ as a Qld school sport to where it is today with 8 regions competing annually. Dave was responsible for some major changes during his time as Chair, in particular, the revamping of the competition to make it more equitable especially for regional country teams by introducing a Plate Competition and completely changing the draw system.

Dave aligned QSSWP with Water Polo Qld (sitting as a board member for four years) to facilitate the most professional championships possible. Due to Dave’s leadership and instigation, our sport has had the luxury of fully qualified referees and a Referee’s Convenor at our QSS Championships since 2006. Before Dave’s time as Chair, the coaches were required to referee all day as well as coach, even if they were not qualified referees.

Dave was the Chair of Sunshine Coast Schools Water Polo for many years. He coached the Regional Schoolboys teams for 12 years. He coached many school teams at Immanuel Lutheran College and St Theresa’s Catholic College. He inspired so many young players over the years.

Dave has coached at all levels- School, Regional, State and National teams. He has the record of coaching the Australian Schoolboys to the biggest winning margin in a series since the Trans-Tasman annual series began. Dave has been the convenor of two State Championships and two National Championships.

Dave Glassock was rewarded for his hard work and leadership with Life Membership of Qld School Sport in 2011. Our water polo community will sadly miss such an amazing and inspiring man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Jen and their family.

Our deepest sympathies go to Dave’s family, friends and the wider community.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Dave’s life will be held in the Champagnat Centre at St Thomas Moore School, Ben Lexcen Drive, Sunshine Beach on Saturday, 4th March 2017 commencing at 3 pm.

Please wear sporting attire from your association or Club.

Entry and parking are available off Bicentennial Drive.
