Sport and Recreation - Greater Brisbane Area Update

Published Tue 12 Jan 2021

Please be advised there has been a further update from the Queensland Government today and in particular Sport and Recreation in relation to the Covid requirements for people from the Greater Brisbane area (refer to email below). These requirements will apply to anyone from the Greater Brisbane who travels within Queensland. There are also some specific requirements that will apply to all WPQ Members who will be attending the WPQ State Titles at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre from 19-25 January, 2021. These requirements also apply to any members participating in any training sessions, games or other water polo activities until the 22 January when the State Government will review the current Roadmap requirements. These include:

  • Carry a face mask with you at all times
  • Everyone attending the State Titles (and other aquatic venues for WP) must wear a mask when entering or exiting the venue, when moving around inside the venue and on pool deck
  • People seated outdoors within the venue do not have to wear a mask unless they are not able to social distance 1.5m from other people not from the same household or travelling party/team
  • Players must wear masks at all times except when warming up/warming down, training, on the team bench or within the field of play once the game has commenced
  • People on the bench must be socially distanced 1.5m apart and non-playing team officials, other than the Coach and/or Assistant Coach must wear a mask at all times
  • Table officials must wear a mask at all times
  • Players, Coaches and Referees shall not require a mask during the playing of the game but must resume wearing a mask once the game has officially concluded
  • Anyone in an indoor space – Referees, Selectors, Officials, Staff and Volunteers, Spectators or others must wear a mask at all times

WPQ would also like to reinforce to anyone attending the State Titles event as well as participating in any training sessions, games or other water polo activities the importance of being vigilant with personal hygiene and safety measures until at least 22 January, including:

  • Regular hand sanitising and hand washing
  • Social distancing of 1.5m apart
  • Avoiding hand-shakes, hugs and greetings of any kind
  • Covering of mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing
  • Stay/play/go during events/competitions/training – players, officials, parents and spectators
  • Signing in and out of venues using the QR Code or other means to enable contact tracing
  • Stay at home if you are sick and get tested
  • Rapidly respond to any suspected outbreaks or any possible contact with any individuals who have returned a positive Covid test

We thank you for your continued patience and understanding with this ever evolving situation. Please note that these requirements could change at any time and we will keep you informed of any changes as soon as we are advised.

If you have any further questions regarding the current situation, please visit our website at www.waterpoloqld.com.au , email WPQ via admin@waterpoloqld.com.au or contact the WPQ office via phone on 3367 1661.

Subject: Sport and Recreation - Greater Brisbane Area Update

Dear Stakeholders

Further to my e-mail yesterday, we have received further clarity regarding the easing of restrictions for the Greater Brisbane Area, specifically around the use of face masks and businesses and venues. Firstly, the Roadmap to Easing Queensland Restrictions, effective from 6pm Monday 11th January 2021 until 22 January 2021 is now available on the website along with the Restrictions for Impacted Areas Direction (No. 2).

Please note further detail regarding restrictions specific to the sport, recreation and fitness industries:

  1. Face masks
  • Individuals must carry a face mask at all times
  • Individuals must wear a face mask covering their mouth and nose at all times, including:
    • When in indoor spaces
    • Entering, exiting or inside Major Sports Stadiums, unless the person is seated
    • On public transport or in commercial passenger vehicles
  • Individuals are required to wear a mask outdoors, when it is not possible to physically distance
  • However, the requirements to wear a face mask do not apply:
  • To a person engaged in strenuous physical exercise

Example – exercise in or above the aerobic zone including high-intensity interval training, cycling, running or team sport.

Please note, a person who removes their face mask must resume wearing the face mask as soon as practicable after the circumstance ends.

For more information regarding the wearing and use of face masks please visit the following website.

  1. Businesses and Venues
    • Reduction in occupant density requirements:
      • one person per 4 square metres indoors
        • venues with a floor space less than 200 square metres can have one person per 2 square metres, up to 50 people at a time
      • one person per 2 square metres outdoors
    • Dining-in permitted however patrons must be seated whilst eating and drinking

It is now more important than ever that your organisation continues to comply with the measures detailed in the COVID Safe Plan for your activity. Please note, that for the duration of the restrictions for Greater Brisbane, where a COVID Safe Plan refers to a requirement that is different to a requirement in the Restrictions of Impacted Areas Direction (the Direction), the requirement in the Direction will take precedence over the Industry Plan. I would encourage you to review the Direction to ensure compliance with the new restrictions.

Restrictions regarding events remain consistent with the advice previously provided. However, if your organisation has any upcoming events including attendees from the Greater Brisbane area, it is important to note that the restrictions within an individual’s control (e.g. wearing a face mask) still apply even if they leave or have left the Greater Brisbane area.

As always, if you have any questions regarding the above information, please do not hesitate to contact the team at SR_Covid19@npsr.qld.gov.au.

Kind regards

Andrew Sly
