A WPQ Sharks Academy update from Head Coach Rhys Howden:

What has been the focus of Sharks’ training both pre & post Christmas?

"Pre Christmas was about connection, allowing the group to get to know each other, understand me as a coach, and become familiar with what the program represents.

Since returning, the focus has shifted to building strong habits, developing a high-performance mindset, and giving me the opportunity to better understand each athlete’s strengths and areas for growth."

What do you think has been the biggest learning/takeaway from the program for the athletes so far?

"It’s still early in the journey, but the key takeaway has been recognising the opportunity in front of them, both individually and as a group. It’s about understanding what it truly takes to reach our goals and embracing the growth that comes with that challenge."

How would you describe the culture within the program right now?

"The buy-in has been very positive. The group is eager to work hard and improve each session. The focus now is maintaining that consistency and commitment throughout the year."

What do the next few months look like for the program?

"Term 1 is always a busy period, with athletes balancing club commitments in the Brisbane competition and National League. Our priority is maintaining standards, commitment, and connection despite those demands."

What are you most excited about for the future of the program?

"I’m excited to see how the program continues to evolve and to watch the growth and development of each athlete over the course of the year. "
