Water Polo Australia is pleased to announce that the 2017 Men's Water Polo World League Intercontinental Tournament will be conducted at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, home of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The tournament will run from the 25-30 April 2017 and will attract the world’s best non-European teams including Australia, China, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand and the United States of America.

Australian Men’s Water Polo Head Coach, Elvis Fatovic, is excited about the opportunity for his team to play on home soil.

“The international tournament provides a great opportunity to showcase the sport on Australian soil and will mark the official start of the Aussie Sharks Tokyo campaign,” said Fatovic.

Fatovic believes that entering a new Olympic cycle the Intercontinental Tournament will provide the opportunity for nations to introduce younger players and test new combinations.

“With a number of our high-profile players being on duty for their clubs at the peak of the European season the tournament will provide the opportunity to showcase some young talent,” he said.

Dual Olympian and Australian Goal Keeper, Joel Dennerley, believes that the Tournament will provide great exposure for the sport to the general public

“The World League is an important stepping stone for World Championships, a great chance to promote the sport in Australia and having on the Gold Coast will add to the depth in the sport,” said Dennerley.

Australian team members will come together for a week training camp on the Gold Coast prior to the tournament which will include three days training alongside the USA Team.

Details of how to obtain tickets to attend the world-class tournament will be available in the upcoming weeks, stay tuned to www.waterpoloaustralia.com.au
