The water polo community in Queensland has been nominated for four awards at the inaugural Australian Pride in Sport Awards, which will be held in Melbourne on the 19 June 2018.

The Australian Pride in Sports Awards recognise the exceptional efforts that clubs, organisations, and individuals have made in making sport more inclusive of LGBTI people. The four categories for which water polo has been nominated are:

Submission Category Nominee
LGBTI Community Sports Award Pride Water Polo Challenge
LGBTI Includion Initiative National Water Polo League's Pride Cup and Pride Squad
Out Role Model Jeremy Archer
Inclusive Coach Caelyn Jones - Brisbane Tritons Water Polo Club

“We’re delighted the efforts of those in our water polo community have been recognised with a nomination at the Australian Pride in Sport Awards. We’ve made a commitment to make our sport accessible for everyone and for Jeremy, Caelyn and the two Pride events to be recognised at this year’s Awards is a testament to the hard work and commitment by everyone in the water polo community.” said Robert Donaghue, Chief Executive Officer, Water Polo Queensland.

As one of the founding members of the Pride in Sport Index, which was launched in 2016, water polo across Australia has been at the forefront of creating an environment where all athletes regardless of gender or sexuality are welcome to play.

“As a founding member, we continue to lead the way in welcoming everyone to our sport through events such as the Pride Cup, Pride Shield and with coaches who are champions of diversity. We’re looking forward to celebrating all those who share our commitment to making sport accessible to all.” added Sharyn Tucker, President, Water Polo Queensland.

It is not just water polo events that have been nominated at the Australian Pride in Sport Awards. Caelyn Jones and Jeremy Archer have also been recognised for their continued support of the LGBTI community and making water polo accessible to all. As Brisbane’s first LGBTI water polo club, the Brisbane Tritons boast over 100 registered members and counting, thanks in part to the efforts of Caelyn and Jeremy.

“To be nominated alongside so many amazing individuals is such an honour. As the Diversity Officer for Water Polo Queensland, I’ve seen first-hand how our community in Queensland has embraced the participation of diverse athletes at a club level with the Brisbane Tritons and at a national level with events such as the Pride Cup and Pride Shield. This is something we can all be proud of and I’m looking forward to the Awards and celebrating sports inclusion as a whole. ” said Jeremy Archer, Diversity Officer, Water Polo Queensland Board and 2018 Out Role Model Nominee.
