Brisbane Tritons Teams Medal at the Rainbow Grudge Match

Published Wed 27 Apr 2022

Over the ANZAC Day long weekend, Brisbane Tritons Water Polo Club travelled to Sydney to compete against the Sydney Stingers, Melbourne Surge and Perth White Pointers in the Rainbow Grudge Match.

This was the first time all four clubs had been able to get together since February 2020, when they all attended the IGLA (International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics) in Melbourne.

The Grudge Match is a competition where all clubs enter mixed ability teams, with seasoned veterans playing alongside freshly graduated rookies.

President of Brisbane Tritons Water Polo – Ash Monaghan said “I’m incredibly proud to say that for the first time in six years the Tritons were represented in the Gold Medal Match, not by just one team, but by two. Teams Meanjin and Maiwar secured first and second positions with both teams making it to the Grand Final undefeated. 2023 is going to be a busy year for the Tritons on the domestic and international water polo scene. In March we will be competing in the inaugural AQuA (Australian Queer Aquatics) Carnival being held in Sydney as part of the World Pride Celebrations. We will then be looking to send teams to London for IGLA 2023 in late June and finally the club will be represented in the Gay Games being held in Guadalajara, Mexico in November.”

Water Polo Queensland is pleased to be working with Brisbane Tritons to promote inclusive participation in water polo. With international water polo events back on the calendar, Brisbane Tritons are keen to promote these event participation opportunities and that Tritons will be attending these tournaments and are keen to offer other members of the wider water polo community in Queensland the opportunity to join Brisbane Tritons. Players don’t have to identify as a member of the LGBTIQ+ community to participate in these tournaments, but they need to be aware that the majority of other athletes who participate in these events will be.
